Raf was one of the first designers to introduce street wear to high fashion . Streetwear is traditionally looked down upon in luxury fashion circles, but Raf made it not only acceptable but influenced other designers and fashion houses to be progressive in their acceptance of streetwear . Raf was also one of the first designers to not hire traditional models but do street castings and feature models of different proportions and looks to disrupt the fashion industry norms . Raf was one of the pioneers of the skinny silhouette alongside Hedi Slimane . In his 1998 collection Raf challenged fashion norms by introducing a skinnier aesthetic at a time when muscular, well defined and baggy looks were more popular and runway friendly .

Emotion is an integral element of Rafs creative process. For him the clothes don't mean anything if there is is no emotion attached in viewing them or wearing them . This level of creative integrity and intensity is why i believe why his designs receive such admiration .Raf always asks of himself to deliver an experience which will move people and inspire rather than just put his clothes on a model for a runway show.

Youth and Music

Youth culture, rebellion and music have all been seamlessly integrated into the designers self created world . For Raf his designs are intensely personal to him so naturally he feels compelled to showcase his own individual interests outside of the fashion realm within his collections and aesthetics .Traces of his musical influences are scattered across his work .Rafs interest in music was born out of a need to find a creative outlet and escape from the mundane nature of his small belgian town. Through discovering his love for music Raf became influenced by artists such Kraftwerk, Joy Division and post punk in general, and he artfully channelled those interests and inspirations into his designs .
